Celebrate Law Day 2018
Thursday, April 5th and Friday, April 6th
Law Day is celebrated annually across Canada and was held this year in Thunder Bay on Thursday, April 5, 2018 and Friday, April 6, 2018. Local activities celebrating the law included the OBA-OJEN Competitive Mock Trials competition, as well as an Open House at the Thunder Bay Consolidated Courthouse on Brodie Street.
Thunder Bay Consolidated Courthouse Open House – April 5, 2018 from 5:30 pm to 7:30 pm
The Thunder Bay Law Association invited the public to 125 Brodie Street N. to stroll through the new consolidated courthouse. Local judiciary and members of the Bar were on hand from 5:30 pm to 7:30 pm to greet the public and answer questions as they toured through the building to view the court rooms on the 1st and 2nd floor, as well as the Superior Court judges chambers and the library. Judicial robes from previous decades were on display in the foyer. This free event was attended by over 85 members of the public.
Secondary School Mock Trial Competition – April 6, 2018 from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm
On Friday, April 6th, the Secondary School Mock Trial Competition took place in Courtroom #205. The public was invited to watch the high school teams compete in the morning and/or afternoon sessions. The winning teams names have been added to the to the Justice Wright Law Day Cup! Thank you to all the students who participated, and to the lawyers who volunteer their time to guide and mentor the students in this annual event.
This year the winning team in the morning competition was St. Patrick’s, and in the afternoon Westgate won.
